forget forgivenessThe person you gave your heart to just cheated on you, your boss has dumped on you (yet again), the driver in front just cut you up or worse... You’re fuming and justifiably so, right?

Well yes, maybe!

It’s human to feel anger, but to hold onto it can literally eat us up.

universeMany years ago, I’d been living what I’d thought was the ‘right life’. I was in a corporate dream job and living with the man I’d thought of as my dream man. Then I realized I was living in someone else’s dream.

After many sleepless nights, I ended my relationship, moved out, quit my job, and did a lot of soul searching. At first I didn’t know what I was experiencing was positive change. I thought I was a victim of drama. Lots and lots of drama!

emotionI grew up in a home that was far from ordinary. My friends jokingly referred to it as Willy Wonka’s factory on crack. My mailbox was shaped like a big pink heart; there was purple trim around the outside of the house; every post on the walkway to my front door and every cabinet in the kitchen was a different pastel color.

challengeThis morning I taught a vinyasa class and one of my favorite students asked me to teach an intense arm balance. Immediately the room became uncomfortable- some sighing in annoyance, and others saying “Oh Crap” under their breath.

It’s interesting how people have ingrained feelings toward things they think they can’t achieve- yet how facing the reality of what their body is actually capable of on the mat is a huge gateway for them to challenge themselves outside the studio.

katrina senn yogaWhen you think of 'getting fit', 'losing weight' or exercise what comes to your mind?

Do you think you have to join the rows of people sweating it out on treadmills in the gym?  Do you think you have to wear tight, sweaty and unflattering gym clothes?  Do you think you have to start pounding the pavement in an effort to get fit?  Do you think of having to get yourself in an uncomfortable, breathless state?

warriorVirabhadra was a fierce warrior born from a hair off Shiva’s head. Shiva the compassionate Lord, who is both creator and destroyer, destroys obstacles and crushes ignorance. He used his divine powers to create Virabhadra to achieve specific desires and defeat enemies. Hence why Virabhadrasana or Warrior postures are great opportunities to go deeper within and to reflect on what it really means to be a “Warrior” in our everyday lives.

female vs maleI recently had a bit of an epiphany. I suddenly realized that although we live in a male dominated, patriarchal society, men are not to blame…neither are women. What dawned on me was that this imbalance is much deeper than gender… it’s energy.

We can see clearly the opposing forces in the Universe; light and darkness, yin and yang, sun and moon, male and female. No longer do we need to point fingers or find someone or worse, an entire group to blame on why the world is so messed up.

clear clutterWhen we are feeling stuck or unmotivated in our lives, there is always reason(s) for this. When this happens it's a great time to notice what's going on and move energy both in our body and lives. This is when we may (un)consciously reach for our "crutch" or support - oftentimes this can be anything that suppresses feelings and common habits are indulging in excess food, coffee, work, alcohol or drugs.

learning to loveLove, I think, is a sustained openness to another person.

Alva Noë Thich Nhat Hanh teaches about love like this: Love is Understanding. If we don’t understand someone then we cannot truly love them.

I find this very challenging. Understanding would be easier if it were a one-time, static thing, but it’s not. It’s a practice that we do every moment. Just because my partner likes to walk one day, it doesn’t mean that he won’t want to take a taxi next time.

Overcome your story with YogaSo I've spent the last month challenging my students to rid themselves of their past stories.  A conversation one would normally hear, during an episode on Oprah's Life Class or a Tony Robins Breakthrough capture, but now appropriately placed front and center on the mat.

The mat being the very place us Yogi's go to reconnect with self, putting our bodies through a series of motions, meditations and breath.  As layers of ego peel themselves naturally from skin to core unveiling a light so pure and shiny, one would have to sport Ray-Bans (am I aging myself!?) while leaving the mat.

relationships like yoga posesThe first few breaths ( years) are bliss, then all of a sudden your holding your breath (and biting your tongue)

Yoga means “union, to bring together.” Within your physical practice you negotiate the UNION of the mind with body, body with breath, and breath with movement. A union of some sort takes place in any relationship whether it’s student /teacher, parent/child, or in marriage, which is thought to be the most sacred union- although I wouldn’t ask Katy Perry or Kim Kardashian for advice on that.

yoga bringing balanceIn the midst of a painting project over the weekend, I found myself in a rather sticky situation requiring the use of my left hand to finish the job.

A thought drifted across my head.. “A right-handed girl with a right-sided brain.” Sounds un-balanced I know and ironic that I would be scripting a post dedicated to such, as I stare at the familiar word “Balance” taped to the very top of my computer screen...
